Abstract

Telecast, in English, télédiffusion, in French or teledifusión, in Spanish, usually are associated with the long-distance transmission of images and (in an almost imperceptible proportion) sounds. This association that does not necessarily imply a reflection about the nature of the used support, which is taken for granted as cordless, in spite of the fact that as regards sound, the modern telecasted or broadcasted communications were transmitted by copper wire. The late inclusion of this word into language dictionaries strengthens, in fact, its identification with the iconic medium and the hertzian way. The evidence is the neologism «teledistribution», born in the second half of the twentieth century to name the Cable TV. However, hardly two years had passed since the invention of the telephone, when, through the incipient Swiss telephonic net, dramatic and musical shows were passed on. At the beginning of the next decade, during the International Exposition of Electricity held in Paris, the transmissions between Palais Garnier and other exhibition's halls operated by the French pioneer, Clement Ader, awaked a bigger echo. These experimental sessions were repeated and institutionalized at the end of the decade. Meanwhile, similar initiatives turned up, from the United States to Austria, including Germany, Spain and Portugal. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the enterprises increased, including every time more performances. Then, Marconi and others pioneers had promoted the emergence of the «wireless telegraphy», and others, such as Lee De Forest, were trying to surpass the still insurmountable barrier of the sound amplification. Historiography has studied «radio», but rarely telecast. This paper tries fulfill this gap.
